Newbury, Friday 1st March

Today we head to our local track Newbury with four runners.

Our first runner is Il Va De Soi in the Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at 1.50pm, Alice Stevens rides. He ran two really nice races in Novice company before bitterly disappointing on his handicap debut at Doncaster where he never got into any kind of a rhythm. I’ve put a pair of cheekpieces on him today because he looks to me like he’s a much more talented horse than he produced that day. This looks a decent race but I’m hopeful he can run a nice race. If he runs as well as he did as a novice here two runs ago then he’d have a decent chance.

Next up is Glorious Lion in the Juvenile Hurdle at 2.25pm. He actually ran quite a nice race last time out at Ludlow, on a track that wouldn’t have really suited him. He jumped nicely and stayed on quite well. I think this track will suit him much better. It looks a competitive little race but I’m hoping he can run into a place. He’s very fit and I think he stays well which he’ll need to in this ground.

Kansas City Star is up next in the Handicap Chase at 4.10pm who, if the ground was good I’d be really confident about him. He’s improved since his last run, I’ve been absolutely chuffed to bits with his work. He looks great, he’s in a really good place, I do just worry that in this ground he’s not going to be seen to his best.

Our final runner of the day is Young Butler in the Handicap Hurdle at 4.45pm. We’ve had a really frustrating season with him, since he won well first time out for us back here in November. He’s been on the go and ready to run for some time and we’ve been waiting for some better ground. We’ve run out of patience a bit with the weather and we’re going to roll the dice and run on ground we know he’s not going to be in love with, but he’s fresh, fit and well and ready to go, just hopefully he can cope with the ground.
